TOEFL
TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) evaluates the English proficiency of individuals whose native language is not English. TOEFL scores are required for purposes of admission by more than 4,400 colleges and universities worldwide. In addition, government agencies, scholarship programs, and licensing/certification agencies use TOEFL scores to evaluate English proficiency.
The test is offered in two formats: computer-based (CBT) and paper-based. The CBT which is offered year-round cannot be taken in Poland (Bratislava is the nearest city where it can be taken).
The paper-based TOEFL is offered five times a year - in January, May, August, September and October. Candidates are given a test book and a paper answer sheet on which they record their responses.
The test has three sections:
- Listening Comprehension - measures ability to understand English as it is spoken in North America.
- Structure and Written Expression - measures ability to recognize language that is appropriate for standard written English.
- Reading Comprehension - measures ability to understand nontechnical reading matter.
The TOEFL program does not operate, license, endorse or recommend any schools or study materials that claim to prepare people for the test in a short time or that promise them high scores on the test.
In order to register for the test candidates must complete the registration form which can be found on www.toefl.org (online registration). Current test fee is USD 110.
More information concerning the format of the exam (including a list of topics for the written part) can be obtained at the reception desk.
