FCE

The First Certificate in English (FCE) is an examination designed for intermediate learners of English. Exams organised by the British Council are held three times a year - in March, June and in December.

Learners at this level are expected to handle the main structures of the language with some confidence, demonstrate knowledge of a wide range of vocabulary and use appropriate communicative strategies in a variety of social situations. They should be able to produce written texts of various types, showing the ability to develop an argument, as well as describe events.

The examination consists of five papers:

• Paper 1 Reading - 1 hour and 15 minutes
• Paper 2 Writing - 1 hour and 30 minutes
• Paper 3 Use of English - 1 hour and 15 minutes
• Paper 4 Listening - approximately 40 minutes
• Paper 5 Speaking - approximately 14 minutes

The overall grade is based on all five papers which are weighted equally; there are three pass grades (ABC) and two fail grades (DE). Grade C corresponds to 60% of the total marks.

Statements of results are issued about two months after the examination has been taken. Certificates are issued six weeks after the issue of statements of results.
