CAE

Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) is an examination designed for competent users of English as a foreign language. Exams are held three times a year - in March, June and in December. CAE is recognised by the majority of British universities for English language entrance requirements. More information about university or corporate recognition is available from the UCLES website.

Learners at this level are expected to be able to use the structures of the language with ease and fluency. They should be aware of the relationship between language and the culture it exists in, and of the significance of register. Thus, they should be able to adapt their language use to a variety of social situations, and express opinions and take part in discussions and arguments in a culturally acceptable way. Learners should be able to produce a variety of types of texts, such as letters of varying degree of formality. They are expected to use language in a creative and flexible way, producing quite long and complex utterances.

Candidates are expected to use a particular variety of English with some degree of consistency in areas such as spelling, and not switch from using a British spelling of a word to an American spelling of the same word in the same written response to a given task.

The examination consists of five papers:

  • Paper 1 Reading - 1 hour and 15 minutes
  • Paper 2 Writing - 2 hours
  • Paper 3 Use of English - 1 hour and 30 minutes
  • Paper 4 Listening - approximately 45 minutes
  • Paper 5 Speaking - approximately 15 minutes

The overall grade is based on all five papers which are weighted equally; there are three pass grades (ABC) and two fail grades (DE). Grade C corresponds to 60% of the total marks.

Statements of results are issued about two months after the examination has been taken. Certificates are issued six weeks after the issue of statements of results.

Current exam fee is PLN 540.

More detailed information concerning the format of the exam can be obtained at the reception desk.
